Between Bluffton’s small-town soul and Hilton Head’s salt-kissed shores lies a golfer’s paradise unlike any other in the Southeast. South Carolina’s Lowcountry is home to some of the most iconic and beloved golf courses. But what exactly draws golfers to this southern slice of paradise each year?

Is it the world-class course design? The perfect year-round weather? Or is it simply that there’s nothing like a Southern coastal town?

As you walk the courses here, one thing becomes clear, golfing in Hilton Head and Bluffton isn’t just about the game. It’s about the experience and for locals, it’s a way of life.

A Landscape Built for Golf

There’s a reason why Hilton Head is consistently ranked among the top golfing destinations in the U.S. Between Hilton and Bluffton courses like Harbour Town Golf Links, Palmetto Dunes and May River at Palmetto Bluff this area offers variety for all skill levels, set against backdrops that are nothing short of breathtaking.

These courses don’t just exist within nature; they are shaped buy it. Fairways weave through ancient maritime forests, Spanish moss nestled in the marsh, bunkers hug tidal creeks and wildlife sightings – like the occasional alligators, herons and deer- are part of the rhythm of play.

“The courses around here are absolutely unique and the weather is perfect. Nothing beats the views,” said Hilton Head local Dom Claudio, who enjoys golf by the sea.

A Legacy of Championship Play

Hilton Head Island may be synonymous with luxury, but it’s also steeped in competitive tradition. Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines Resort, designed by legendary Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, is home to the RBC Heritage, South Carolina’s only PGA Tour event. The course is as beautiful as it is challenging. It’s known for its tight fairways, small greens and the iconic red-and-white lighthouse.

“This year was my first time going to the RBC Heritage since relocating here three years ago, and I loved it. I’ve never attended a PGA tournament and being so close to such a big event was a unique experience for me. I will be making this an annual tradition,” Jacob Slater said about creating new traditions and enjoying golf life on and off the course.

Whether you are watching the pro or testing your own game on the same turf, playing here gives golfers a taste of history and prestige.

Bluffton’s Hidden Gems

Hilton Head has long taken center stage, but Bluffton isn’t just in the background- it holds its own charm and appeal. Courses like Old South Golf Links and Hampton Hall combine Southern hospitality with challenging layouts that often surprise first-time players.

Bluffton has a more laid-back, small-town vibe, but the golf is anything but ordinary. The slower the pace off the course allows for deeper connection with your golfing buddies, the natural setting, and the game itself.

Bluffton resident Chad Barrs said, “Bluffton has a good mixture of both challenging and forgiving courses. I enjoy being able to golf minutes away from home and can stop by my favorite restaurants afterwards. It’s the definition of living the golf life.”

And Dave Ellington added, “Courses are generally in great shape, pace of play is good and scenery is great.”

The Culture Around the Clubhouse

One of the defining features of the Hilton Head/Bluffton golf scene is its culture. It’s not just about your score. It’s about who you meet, the laughs shared over drinks after 18 holes, and the sense of community that seems to form effortlessly.

Whether you’re chatting with locals over lunch at a clubhouse or meeting visitors from around the world, there’s a sense of belonging that turns strangers into friends. Southern charm and Southern hospitality are ever present wherever you go.

More than a Vacation

For many golfers, trips to Hilton Head or Bluffton aren’t one-time visits, they are traditions.

Chad Barrs mentioned visiting Hilton Head with his family most of his life before moving here as an adult. There’s a saying that you should live where you vacation and he did just that. He and many others plan annual trips, golf getaways, and families return year after year. Some even make the Lowcountry their permanent home because they are drawn to the quality of life and of course, the golf!

Here are a few tips for your next adventure.
